How well would this hold an older model Macbook Pro? (aka non-unibody)
The BookArc fits ALL current and previous MacBooks and MacBook Pros. It even fits many previous gen. PowerBooks. If your Apple notebook is 1.08-inches thick (or thin), the BookArc will fit. Here’s a great site to check your Mac’s dimensions. http://www.everymac.com/
Is this stand made out of plastic or metal (aluminum)?
it is manufactured with powder-coated steel
Hi. How do I turn on the laptop? Do I always have to take it out from the BookArc, turn it on, connect it to the monitor and put it back?
Insert the closed MacBook in ‘sleep mode’, plug-in your external monitor, keyboard and mouse, then ‘wake up’ the MacBook with input from the keyboard or mouse. Here’s a bit more info at the BookArc Tech Specs page: http://twelvesouth.com/products/bookarc/tech-specs/ And here you’ll find complete instructions directly from Apple regarding using your MacBook closed: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131
Thanks Andrew! I am definitely going to be buying this now that I know it is made of metal. The BookArc looks so much better than the $300 Floater.
Wow looks amazing. I want one!!! How well does the CD/DVD drive work on its side (Is it ok)?
Just fine in our experience. The iMac CD/DVD shares the exact same vertical orientation & position, btw.
It’s amazing. I loved and I’d like to buy one for my mac. But 100,00US$ for 0.77kg international shipping?? It’s insane.
Agreed. International shipping rates are harsh. That’s why we are quickly setting up global distribution for all Twelve South items. Hopefully soon, you’ll be able to buy a Twelve South BookArc right down the street – in any street in the world.
I have an older MBP (non-unibody) and I’m concerned because the optical drive is on one side which means you’ll have to set it so that it’s facing up. However, if you do that, the ventilation, which is on the opposite side would be facing down. Do you think it will affect the cooling?
Your answer above was a bit vague on the whole starting up procedure. This looks great for me as I use my laptop primarily at home on my TV, but it does seem to be a pain to open it up, push the power button, then close and re-insert it each time i want to use it (pretty much daily) and leaving it on standby most of the time seems wasteful. Is there any other method you know of to turn on the mac without opening it? This really does look like a nice option so I’m really hoping there is a solution for this. Thanks!
We have a previous gen 15-inch MBP on a BookArc here in the studio and it works perfectly – except we have to plug the power in facing front. No big deal but not as clean as the Unibody design with all connections on one side.
Here are specific instructions from Apple how to use MacBooks in closed clamshell (display closed) mode – http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131 Regarding Sleep Mode versus full Power Off. We know many people that go for months without fully powering off their MacBooks. Maybe for them, the hours saved powering up and shutting down make up for the tiny trickle charge it takes to keep their MacBook in Sleep Mode.
should the vent be facing down to the ground or up … does it matter?
i love it tho. opened so much space on my desk
Hello there,
Great blog, I just stumbled upon it and I am already a fan.
Technically, I don’t think it matters. Aesthetically, there’s no question – Mac logo up!
Doesn’t this put a lot of stress on the mini-DisplayPort adaptor and port? It is tiny as it is and the relatively huge plugs on the business end of it is pretty heavy when hooked up to the bulky monitor cable and hanging off of it.
i have an speck clear case on my mac book 13″ about 2 months away from being brand new and i was curious if i’d fit? it is 1.12 inches thick
The shells will not work with the included silicone inserts. The largest insert is #2 and it’s 1.08 inches wide. There are people we’ve heard of using the BookArc ‘without’ the insert in them, but we don’t recommend it.
Hi, what’s the international rate for shipping by now? I need a BookArc and a BackPack to the Czech Republic…Thanks
